Ce livre traite des concepts de l'éthique et de la morale modernes, dans une perspective critique par rapport au point de vue dominant qui place la morale dans l'ordre des règles et des conventions sociales et laisse l'éthique sur le terrain de l'expérience personnelle. Il tente de découvrir le lien complexe et dialectique entre l'éthique et la morale, depuis l'Éthique et la Politique d'Aristote jusqu'à la philosophie et l'éthique environnementales contemporaines. Il analyse la contribution de la philosophie environnementale à la rénovation de la philosophie du vingtième siècle. Leur perspective analytique est que la poussée fondamentale de la philosophie environnementale est la question éthique et les problèmes moraux. La "Raison environnementale" moderne a émergé, comme un nouvel impératif catégorique à l'action des hommes, postulant : 1. La philosophie environnementale construit une nouvelle ontologie créée par la critique de l'anthropocentrisme. 2. Mais, seule son articulation avec une nouvelle épistémologie, fondée dans la critique de l'ethnocentrisme, pourrait conduire à une nouvelle théorie éthique universelle. 3. Cependant, l'éthique appliquée de la philosophie environnementale a besoin d'une nouvelle éthique politique globale formée sur la critique contre l'aliénation politique et la pensée unique.
