Os desenvolvimentos tribológicos desempenharam um papel fundamental, na conservação de materiais e energia, e na preservação do ambiente em várias aplicações no dia-a-dia. As perdas por fricção e as emissões representam um grave problema para os projectistas e engenheiros da indústria automóvel. As perdas por fricção e desgaste em motores IC não só reduzem a sua eficiência como também aumentam o nível de emissões. A fim de aumentar a eficiência e reduzir as emissões, é inevitável desenvolver soluções alternativas e apropriadas para reduzir o atrito e o desgaste nos motores de CI. Este objectivo pode ser alcançado utilizando um material eficiente ou um lubrificante melhor ou adoptando uma abordagem sinergética. As ligas Hipereutectic Al-Si são adequadas para uma série de aplicações tribológicas em veículos, como pistões, camisas de cilindro, volutas de compressores e blocos de motor e em outros diferentes campos da engenharia. Uma das principais limitações na utilização de ligas de alumínio de alto silício é a formação de fases grosseiras quebradiças sob condições convencionais de solidificação. Contudo, o processamento rápido de solidificação (RSP) com condição de sinterização T6 é muito eficaz na limitação do endurecimento do silício primário devido à elevada taxa de arrefecimento.
