Ein Nanofluid ist eine Flüssigkeit, die Partikel in Nanometergröße (1-100 mm) enthält, sogenannte Nanopartikel. Ein Nanofluid kann erzeugt werden, indem nanometergroße Partikel in Basisflüssigkeiten suspendiert werden. Die in Nanofluiden verwendeten Nanopartikel bestehen in der Regel aus Metallen (Al, Cu), Oxiden (Al2O3, CuO, TiO2, SiO2), Karbiden (SiC), Nitriden (AlN, SiN) oder Nichtmetallen (Graphit, Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhren) und besitzen einzigartige physikalische und chemische Eigenschaften. Sie können reibungslos durch Mikrokanäle fließen, ohne zu verstopfen, da sie so klein sind, dass sie sich ähnlich wie flüssige Moleküle verhalten. Die Nanofluide sind in verschiedenen industriellen und nanotechnologischen Prozessen nützlich, z. B. bei der Kühlung elektronischer Geräte, der Kühlung von Fahrzeugen, Kernreaktoren, Wärmetauschern, dem Wärmemanagement von Fahrzeugen und vielen anderen. Magneto-Nanofluide haben spezifische Anwendungen in der Biomedizin, optische Modulatoren, magnetische Zelltrennung, magneto-optische Wellenlängenfilter, Seidenflossentrennung, nichtlineare optische Materialien, Hyperthermie, optische Schalter, Medikamentenabgabe, optische Gitter usw.
