Il n'existe pas de définition unique et précise, car il existe différentes significations dans la législation sur le contrôle des drogues, les réglementations gouvernementales, la médecine et l'usage familier. En pharmacologie, un médicament est "une substance chimique utilisée dans le traitement, la guérison, la prévention ou le diagnostic d'une maladie ou utilisée pour améliorer le bien-être physique ou mental". Les médicaments peuvent être prescrits pour une durée limitée, ou de façon régulière pour des troubles chroniques.
