Le sperme se compose de deux éléments principaux, les spermatozoïdes et le plasma séminal. Le plasma séminal est sécrété par les testicules et les glandes sexuelles accessoires. Il s'agit d'un fluide très complexe qui contient divers composés, dont les protéines du plasma séminal. Il existe différentes protéines du plasma séminal chez les bovins, dont les protéines BSP. Il s'agit de la principale fraction protéique (50-70%) du plasma séminal bovin et elle appartient à la famille des protéines de liaison aux phospholipides. Ces protéines sont soit bénéfiques, soit nuisibles au stockage des spermatozoïdes. Par conséquent, les protéines BSP agissent comme une épée à double tranchant. Elles se lient aux phospholipides de choline de la membrane du sperme lors de l'éjaculation et se lient également aux facteurs de capacitation et favorisent la capacitation des spermatozoïdes. D'autre part, les protéines BSP induisent également l'efflux de cholestérol et de phospholipides. Ainsi, l'exposition continue des spermatozoïdes aux BSP est préjudiciable aux spermatozoïdes dans le sperme liquide ou congelé. Sa concentration joue donc un rôle important dans la conservation du sperme. Ce livre explique l'origine et la fonction des protéines du plasma séminal bovin chez les espèces bubalines.
