Nel XVIII secolo, Furetière, membro dell'Académie Française, distingueva tra le situazioni in cui le persone si "medicano" (automedicazione) e quelle in cui si "medicano" (con una prescrizione) (Baumelou et al., 2006). Oggi, l'automedicazione è l'atto di curare se stessi senza una consultazione medica e con medicine consegnate senza una prescrizione medica preventiva. I farmaci di automedicazione sono soggetti a un'autorizzazione alla commercializzazione (MA), ma non sono inclusi nelle liste delle sostanze velenose (I, II, narcotici), quindi non è necessaria una prescrizione. L'automedicazione è un fenomeno diffuso in Francia, dato che più di sette francesi su 10 vi fanno ricorso (AFIPA, 2013). Tuttavia, questo comportamento non è privo di rischi: uso improprio (abuso, errori di dosaggio, ecc.), perdita di opportunità (trattamento medico ritardato, ecc.), sovradosaggio, interazioni, effetti avversi e dipendenza. È quindi molto importante che i pazienti che si automedicano cerchino informazioni dai professionisti della salute, cioè il medico o il farmacista.
