Maxillofaziale Defekte können als Folge von Traumata, angeborenen Störungen und oder ablativer Chirurgie auftreten und durch plastische Chirurgie rekonstruiert oder durch prothetische Mittelrehabilitation behandelt werden. Bei großen Defekten wird aufgrund der unzureichenden ästhetischen Ergebnisse chirurgischer Eingriffe die prothetische Rehabilitation der chirurgischen Rekonstruktion vorgezogen. Die Retention der kraniofazialen Prothese ist jedoch trotz der zufriedenstellenden ästhetischen Ergebnisse ein großes Problem. Mit der Vorstellung extraoraler Implantate wurde die Retention von Kiefergelenksprothesen verbessert und osseointegrierte kraniofaziale Implantate sind für die Retention und Stabilität unverzichtbar geworden. Eine mit Implantaten erhaltene Prothese hat eine längere funktionelle Lebensdauer und eine bessere Ästhetik durch feine Ränder. In diesem Buch werden klinische und chirurgische Überlegungen beim Einsatz von Implantaten für Kiefergelenksprothesen vorgestellt.
