Bioﬁlm is een veel voorkomende wijze van bacteriegroei op organische of anorganische oppervlakken in contact met een vloeistof en blijkt een dynamisch proces te zijn waarbij verschillende mechanismen betrokken zijn bij de hechting en groei van bacteriën op synthetische materialen. Om de adhesiekinetiek van bacteriën binnen biofilms te bepalen, werd de vorming van zuivelbiofilms en thermoresistente B.cereus biofilm uitgevoerd in siliconen en roestvrijstalen continue stroom pilot circuits. De waarnemingen met ESEM toonden een compacte structuur van biofilms na 9 uur contact op de dragers met een bezettingspercentage van 90% van het oppervlak, met variaties in de fysisch-chemische kenmerken van ydrophobiciteit en oppervlaktespanning. Om de biofilmremmingsmethode te optimaliseren, werd een bio-coating door een stam van Lc. lactis ontwikkeld om het oppervlak te beschermen door het opkomende fenomeen van "coating", waardoor bacteriële adhesie en bijgevolg biofilmvorming tot een minimum worden beperkt. Uit de evaluatie van het effect van de bio-coating van de dragers bleek een daling van het percentage aangehechte cellen tot 80%.
