L'auteur étudie le problème de la formation des perceptions de l'Orient par les Anglais à la fin du XVIe - premier tiers du XVIIe siècle à travers l'étude des observations, commentaires, jugements de valeur des voyageurs sur les villes situées à l'est de la Perse. La ville orientale dans la perception des voyageurs est étudiée comme un système d'images complexe, qui comprend les images des porteurs de pouvoir, des habitants de la ville, les notions de morphologie de l'espace urbain, etc. Une telle approche permet d'éviter la fragmentation dans l'étude des mécanismes de perception de l'"étranger" et de pénétrer plus profondément dans les processus de description de la réalité "autre".
