Les théories économiques ont été très nombreuses et sont aujourd'hui incluses dans un mode épistémologique de sélection : elles se cumulent entre elles, et les moins explicatives sont délaissées. L'idée selon laquelle les théories économiques sont souvent opposées entre elles relèvent plus du champ normatif que du champ positif des théories économiques. En effet, le volet normatif des théories économiques amène à des propositions et ce sont ces propositions qui font débat (et engendrent de fréquentes oppositions). Pour maîtriser la théorie économique, il est nécessaire d'avoir une vue d'ensemble des grands courants qui ont traversé l'histoire des idées de la discipline et d'être capable de les décrire très sommairement les uns par rapport aux autres. Il faut bien sûr être conscient que cela constitue une reconstruction a posteriori, avec ses limites, comme la tendance à occulter à la fois les dissensions entre économistes du même ' camp ' et les convergences de ceux d'écoles différentes. Cet ouvrage expose les écoles des pensées ci-après : les pensées économiques dans l'antiquité et au moyen-âge, les physiocrates, les classiques, le socialisme, les néoclassiques, le marxisme, etc.
