La situation sécuritaire au Sahel notamment dans la zone des trois frontières (Burkina Faso-Mali-Niger) résulte de plusieurs facteurs géopolitiques. Depuis la guerre civile algérienne et malgré les opérations Barkhane, Takuba en appui aux forces armées nationales des trois Etats , le Liptako Gourma est devenu un refuge des groupes armés terroristes. Le printemps arabe qui a entraîné la déstabilisation du Maghreb, à travers la chute des régimes en Libye et en Tunisie, a occasionné l'arrivée au Sahel, de milliers de combattants. Venus avec un arsenal de guerre pillé des casernes libyennes, ces combattants vont appuyer la branche armée du MNLA en conflit sécessionniste. Les cellules dormantes des organisations islamistes algériennes qui avaient trouvé refuge dans le nord du Mali, ont saisi cette opportunité pour se remettre en activité. Cette alliance entre militants du MNLA, les groupes islamistes algériens et les combattants venus de la Libye va occasionné l'occupation territoriale du Liptako par ces groupes terroristes. La lutte pour la sécurisation de la zone, amène les Etats à opérer des choix stratégiques, plongeant la région au c?ur des rivalités internationales.
