Dans le contexte africain et dans les habitudes langagières, la fille est préparée à comprendre que la femme est faite pour la procréation et l’entretien du foyer. Au nom de la maternité et de tout ce que cela implique comme charges, la femme est condamnée à faire la cuisine, le ménage et la lessive pour son mari et ses petits enfants. Elle devient par là un esclave volontaire dans une société où les avatars de l’opinion commune se transmettent de génération en génération. Ainsi, se développent des stéréotypes langagiers tendant à maintenir la femme dans un complexe d’infériorité et de soumission. Ce livre n’a ni l’intention de combattre la tradition, ni celle de proposer un renversement des rôles dans les rapports masculin/féminin. Il tient en compte, via le cas du Burundi, de l’état de la question des idées reçues qui circulent dans le langage autour de l’infériorisation de la femme et leurs implications sur le vécu quotidien des femmes. La domination masculine est un fait qui se manifeste surtout dans le langage stéréotypé - le cela- va-de-soi - c’est-à-dire dans le répertoire verbal de l’opinion commune.
