Die Maxillofaziale Prothetik ist ein Spezialgebiet der Zahnmedizin, das sich mit der Rehabilitation von Patienten mit erworbenen und angeborenen Defekten im Kopf- und Halsbereich beschäftigt. Diese reichen von kleineren bis hin zu größeren funktionellen Behinderungen in Kombination mit kosmetischer Entstellung.Die Entwicklung von Zahnimplantaten aus Titan durch Professor P.I. Branemark führte zur Verfeinerung von knochenverankerten Prothesen für das Gesicht und angrenzende Strukturen. Maxillofaziale Prothese wird im aktuellen Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms - GPT 81 als jede Prothese definiert, die zum teilweisen oder vollständigen Ersatz einer stomatognathen und/oder kraniofazialen Struktur dient. Der Zweig der Prothetik, der sich mit der Wiederherstellung und/oder dem Ersatz der stomatognathen (Kiefer) und kraniofazialen (Gesichts-) Strukturen durch Prothesen befasst, die regelmäßig oder elektiv entfernt werden können oder nicht. Die implantatgetragene maxillofaziale Prothetik wird unter folgenden Untertiteln betrachtet: - Aurikuläre Prothesen- Nasenprothesen- Orbitaprothetik- Oberkiefer- und Jochbeinprothese- Unterkiefer-Prothese
