Es ist gut dokumentiert, dass die oralen Läsionen bei HIV-positiven Patienten . das erste Anzeichen einer zugrunde liegenden HIV-Infektion sein können, deren HIV-Status zum Zeitpunkt der Untersuchung möglicherweise nicht bekannt ist. als potenzielle klinische Marker des Krankheitsverlaufs bei HIV-Positiven dienen und als AIDS-definierende Läsionen dienen. Daher sollten Zahnärzte damit rechnen, dass HIV-infizierte Patienten entweder wegen ihrer routinemäßigen zahnärztlichen Belange oder wegen Beschwerden im Zusammenhang mit ihrer Grunderkrankung eine Behandlung aufsuchen.
