este estudo toma a forma de uma análise qualitativa da recepção da audiência; para investigar como um determinado grupo de audiências femininas situadas no Zimbabué interpreta os anúncios televisivos de prevenção do VIH/SIDA. Examina em que medida o contexto social influencia a aceitação ou rejeição por parte do público de leituras preferenciais codificadas nos textos. O estudo situa-se dentro do amplo quadro teórico e metodológico tanto da comunicação para o desenvolvimento como das abordagens dos estudos culturais ao estudo dos meios de comunicação social. Os resultados indicam que as estratégias interpretativas do público feminino foram informadas pela sua experiência vivida, bem como pelos conhecimentos pré-existentes. Com base nos resultados, pode-se deduzir que, ao contrário de crenças e teorias anteriores dos meios de comunicação, tais como a teoria da "agulha hipodérmica", o público da comunicação pública não é uma massa passiva homogénea que facilmente sucumbe às influências dos meios de comunicação, mas sim o público é activo na produção de significado, mas sob condições determinadas em contextos particulares. Os textos, as instituições produtoras e a história social das audiências fornecem estas condições.
