Dit boek wil een filosofische basis bieden om te pleiten voor een versie van Pluralisme die theoretische steun geeft aan een vorm van Politiek Liberalisme die gericht is op het verbeteren van de communicatie tussen een verscheidenheid van culturen op het hoogste niveau. De auteur betoogt dat de basisverbintenissen van het Politiek Liberalisme ten aanzien van egalitarisme en de autonomie van de individuen veronderstellen dat de staat pluralistisch is, waarin een verscheidenheid van culturen fungeert als de context van de keuze voor de individuen. Om de filosofische positie van het pluralisme te verdedigen, introduceert de auteur een alternatieve benadering van autonomie, waarin de autonomie van een individu neerkomt op zijn "vermogen om te kiezen". Zij toont aan dat de autonomie van een individu afneemt als zijn keuzevrijheid wordt beperkt, waarbij zij stelt dat de ruimste keuzevrijheid alleen in overeenstemming met pluralisme kan worden gehandhaafd. De hier gegeven alternatieve beschrijving van autonomie en de anti-essentialistische opvatting van culturele identiteiten leidt tot de conclusie dat de diversiteit van culturen de context is waarin een individu kan kiezen. Pluralisme is dus de filosofische positie die het best verenigbaar is met de nieuwe beschrijving van het autonome individu.
