Deze twee romans van de bekende Venezolaanse auteurs Miguel Otero Silva en Francisco Herrera Luque behandelen beide de Venezolaanse dictator Juan Vicente Gomez die aan de macht bleef tot zijn dood in 1935. Terwijl Otero Silva's "Fiebre" werd geschreven tijdens zijn bewind en een getuigenis is van het studentenverzet onder Gomez, werd "En la casa del pez que escupe el agua" zo'n veertig jaar na de legendarische dictator gepubliceerd en Herrera Luque in deze roman van historia fabulada (gefictionaliseerde geschiedenis) mythiseert en demystificeert de dictator. Caudillismo, militarisme en dictatuur zijn toetsstenen van de Latijns-Amerikaanse geschiedenis en politiek en zijn ook inspiratiebron geweest voor een overvloed aan literaire werken. Hoewel de benadering van de centrale figuur van de dictator verschilt, wijzen beide romans op het belang en de erfenis van de dictator, die de Latijns-Amerikaanse psyche blijft vormen en beïnvloeden.
