Un système de stabilisation efficace pour les composites PVC/argile a été établi dans le cadre de ces travaux. Différentes qualités de nano-argile Cloisite fournies par Southern Clay Products Inc. ont été étudiées. Les effets des conditions de traitement sur la structure des composites PVC/argile ont été étudiés. La structure du composite a été caractérisée par les méthodes TEM et XRD. La structure particulaire de la résine PVC a affecté la distribution de l'argile, qui pourrait être améliorée en augmentant la température de traitement. Des nanocomposites de PVC/Cloisite 30B presque entièrement exfoliés ont été préparés avec succès par un procédé de mise en solution dans du tétrahydrofuranne, et la résistance à la migration du plastifiant de ce composite a été considérablement améliorée. D'autres charges commerciales pour le PVC, telles que le carbonate de calcium et l'hydrotalcite, ont été comparées à la Cloisite 30B. Il est intéressant de constater que la cristallisation du PVC dans les galeries d'argile peut se produire lors du recuit qui augmente l'espacement des galeries d'argile. Il semble y avoir une orientation des cristallites nouvellement formées, et deux types d'orientation ont été proposés.
