Desde que en 2004 el farmacéutico de Pekín Hon Lik ideo, patentó y luego comercializó a través de su empresa Ruyan el primer cigarrillo electrónico, ha transcurrido más de una década y en ese año 2004, en China comenzó a comercializarse el cigarrillo electrónico (cig-e), el cual es un dispositivo que simula a los cigarrillos convencionales y permite inhalar nicotina y otras sustancias de forma vaporizada, sin combustión de tabaco. Desde ese momento, su conocimiento por parte de la población general, así como su comercialización y consumo han ido en aumento. (4) El uso de cigarrillos electrónicos (cig-e), sin embargo, ha seguido en aumento rápidamente desde que se introdujeron por primera vez en el 2006 en EE.UU, la mayoría entre fumadores, de ellos un 15,3% informó en el 2016 que los probó.
