¿Por qué resulta F. Nietzsche un interlocutor tan particularmente valioso para el psicoanálisis? Esta convergencia podría situarse en el estudio de los sueños, el substrato pulsional del sujeto, la pluralidad del yo, la prohibición del incesto como estructurante del psiquismo, el estudio del origen de los sentimientos morales, el cuerpo como representante de una verdad novedosa, etc. Ahora bien, a tales coincidencias teóricas subyace un trasfondo ético, una concepción singular del hombre y la cultura que considera el malestar del sujeto como un hecho enraizado en la civilización y articulado al lenguaje. Todo idealismo constituye para ambos el residuo de una posición infantil que es necesario perder. “El hombre no puede permanecer enteramente niño; a la postre tiene que lanzarse fuera, a la vida hostil. Puede llamarse a esto educación para la realidad"; Tanto la observación psicológica nietzscheana como el tratamiento psicoanalítico freudiano se adentran en las condiciones de este "infantilismo" bajo la hipótesis de que la construcción de un saber acerca de los procesos implicados en el pathos derivaría en consecuencias valiosas, productivas y de límite al malestar subjetivo.
