По данным Всемирной организации здравоохранения «за последние годы частота и удельный вес дегенеративно-дистрофических заболеваний суставов значительно увеличился» . Патология крупных суставов составляет основную часть заболеваний опорно-двигательного аппарата человека, тяжелое нарушение функции которых приводит в свою очередь к затруднению ходьбы, требует дополнительной опоры, значительно ограничивает трудоспособность и социальную адаптацию. «На коленный сустав (КС) приходится одна треть всех дегенеративно-дистрофических заболеваний суставов, артрозом КС страдает около 10% населения старше 55 лет, при этом у 25% больных развиваются выраженные нарушения функции сустава». Несмотря на возрастающее применение тотального эндопротезирования коленного сустава (ТЭКС) при дегенеративно-дистрофических изменениях, количество осложнений и неудовлетворительных результатов достаточно велико, предложенные лечебные мероприятия в большинстве случаев малоэффективны для больных.
