Why Bulgaria Didn’t Become Venice: Roads, Trade and Dervishes

For more than two and a half millennia, the corridor between the Aegean and the Danube carried the silver, grain, and credit of three continents, yet it seldom consolidated a trading society able to govern that traffic on its own terms. This book asks why a road of such commercial reach so rarely produced the institutions that let merchants hold standing as a right they could assign and bequeath. Ranging from the Greek emporion and the Achaemenid road through Ottoman credit to the post-1989 economies, it reconstructs the conditions under which exchange on this ground acquired, or was denied, the power to bind. A pattern recurs across these centuries: standing in trade tended to be conferred from a centre, a sovereign, or a community rather than held as a transferable right, so that wealth moved in abundance without settling into the perpetual, asset-partitioned body that elsewhere turned fortune into lasting power. It treats this divergence as a question in comparative institutional history rather than a property of any people, faith, or landscape, and finds, in economies that built the missing form from ground at least as unpromising, that the road's trajectory was a circumstance and not a destiny. Reading the documentary language of authorisation — the grant, the seal, the conditional privilege — as a grammar of who may bind a stranger, the book sets out a method for reading institutional structure from its own records, legible across orders otherwise too unlike to compare. The question it reopens — how a strategically vital passage acquires, or fails to acquire, the capacity to act for itself — bears directly on the present life of the same ground.
