Description

This book explores various rural livelihood activities in the mangroves of Nigeria's Niger Delta in Africa. It brings to the forefront the vital role coastal forests play in sustainable livelihoods and maintaining ecosystem stability, while also supporting different life forms especially by acting as a spawning ground for fish. Fishing, farming, and logging as primary livelihood activities for households, were analyzed for their contributions to household income. The poverty level was assessed through the Alkire and Foster multidimensional poverty measure to determine poverty profiles. The mangroves remain a valuable ecosystem in the fight against climate change induced sea level rise and rural poverty. Policy framing and design for restoring the mangroves and reducing household poverty in partnership with communities is critical for improving the people's quality of life.
