Una revisión de los antecedentes de la discusión acerca de la forma adecuada de hacer uso del lenguaje en cuanto a su capacidad de representar la realidad, desde la complejidad a la que tiene que hacer frente el pensamiento pluralista griego en su afán de respetar los límites lógicos que impone el pensamiento parmenídeo, hasta el aprovechamiento de esa complejidad por parte de los maestros sofistas en la Atenas del siglo V a.c. para llevar adelante proyectos políticos que redefinirán las pólis griegas con valores democráticos no siempre bien apreciados. Esta circunstancia será la que lleve a que se produzca una batalla intelectual por hacerse del lenguaje entre sofistas y dialécticos, empezada por Sócrates y la primera generación de maestros de virtud política y continuada por Platón y los políticos profesionales que fueron sus contemporáneos. Todo desde el modo apropiado en que se debe utilizar un instrumento tan sutil y peligroso como la palabra.
