Habitualmente suele observarse a la Inteligencia y a las Relaciones Internacionales como disciplinas de las Ciencias Sociales que transitan por caminos separados y, quizás, inconexos. Nada más alejado de eso, como podrá apreciarse cuando abordamos la evolución de la inteligencia a lo largo de la Historia. De este modo, la inteligencia no tuvo su lugar en los estudios teóricos de las relaciones internacionales, sino que debió ir abriéndose un nuevo camino a partir de la teorización que Sherman Kent comenzó a desarrollar sobre esa actividad a mediados del siglo XX. La revalorización de esta relación es fundamental en el mundo actual, plagado de incertidumbres, de cambios impredecibles, sometido incluso a alteraciones con motivo del cambio climático. Esto lleva a que los Estados precisen, imperiosamente, de un alto nivel de inteligencia y de sus métodos de análisis para resolver o prevenir conflictos, para desarrollar el planeamiento estratégico y para llevar adelante los procesos de toma de decisiones.
