Las protagonistas de esta historia son las mujeres gitanas y sus estrategias de resistencia, frente a la represión que el Estado ejerció sobre el Pueblo Gitano a lo largo de la Edad Moderna. Primero, ante los efectos provocados por la alta incidencia de las condenas a galeras entre los hombres; y más tarde, ante su propio encierro, con ocasión del proyecto de exterminio iniciado con la redada general de 1749. Se trata de un recorrido histórico trágico, revertido de miseria, hambre, enfermedad y muerte; pero dignificado por el coraje y una actitud decidida ante la adversidad y la injusticia, que la opresión estatal sometió sobre el Pueblo Gitano, originando un contexto hostil y repleto de conflictos, tanto externos como internos. De esta caótica situación, las gitanas, además del hecho de ser mujeres en un mundo de hombres, partieron de una doble discriminación. Una, por pertenecer a una etnia proscrita; la otra, como pecadoras transgresoras de las normas morales de la Iglesia. Estigmatizadas, hubieron de afrontar todo tipo de penalidades; y lo hicieron de forma vital, emprendedora, indómita y decidida para recuperar lo que le había sido arrebatado: su familia y su libertad.
