Los prejuicios existentes en la cultura influyen mucho sobre las actitudes socializadoras de los adultos, incluidos los padres y maestros, que limitan las posibilidades de socialización en los casos de retraso mental. Hasta hace poco tiempo las personas que padecían retraso mental se consideraban asexuadas, en un estado de inocencia semejante al de un niño e instigados totalmente por los impulsos, incapaces de controlar sus apremios sexuales instintos. Estas falsas creencias, junto con la negativa actitud de la colectividad social poco propensa a reconocer al individuo con retraso mental como una persona con derecho propio, se han conjugado para convertir el tema de la sexualidad en el retraso mental en una cuestión inquietante, que suscita indignación y un reflejo de estas actitudes, en fechas lejanas, era la esterilización de que a menudo eran objeto. La alternativa constituye una opción entre diferentes variantes propuestas, apunta hacia la proyección metodológica de la enseñanza que planifica el docente, dirigiendo el aprendizaje del estudiante, partiendo de sus características y posibilidades, del contenido de la enseñanza y las condiciones concretas del contexto.
