Tout au long de l’histoire, les femmes en général ont de temps à autre recours aux savoirs populaires pour la prévention de certaines complications liées à la maternité. Les femmes enceintes optent au cours de leur période gestationnelle hors des soins institutionnalisés pour certaines pratiques issues de l’expérience de leur entourage ou d’elles même pour devancer les complications pouvant subvenir au moment de l’accouchement. Dans les maternités de Kinshasa, les femmes enceintes viennent quotidiennement assister aux éducations sanitaires pendant leur grossesse. Cependant, bon nombre d’entre elles trainent ces savoirs populaires qui sont légion et qu’elles traduisent par des pratiques autres voire même contradictoires à celles que leur recommandent les prestataires de soins dans les services anténatals. En République Démocratique du Congo, les savoirs populaires sur la grossesse sont peu documentés. C'est la raison pour laquelle cette étude se préoccupe à comprendre les motivations à la base des pratiques de savoirs populaires sur la grossesse par les femmes enceintes kinoises, au travers de celles fréquentant l’Hôpital de Référence de N’djili à Kinshasa, RDC.
