Le redoublement est un des objets d'étude liés à l'École qui suscite le plus de discussions entre les chercheurs et le corps enseignant. Les premiers s'étonnent de la cécité des équipes pédagogiques à la présentation des résultats de plusieurs recherches faisant apparaître le peu d’efficacité, voire la nocivité, d'une telle mesure. Quant aux seconds, ils considèrent que cette modalité d’orientation, historiquement ancrée dans nos mœurs pédagogiques, est prise dans l'intérêt de l’élève tout en étant garante du « maintien » d'un niveau scolaire global minimal. Le redoublement n'a pas été l'objet de recherches récentes en France, en particulier lorsque cette décision est prise en fin de première année de scolarisation élémentaire. Ce niveau d’enseignement, désigné cours préparatoire, a une forte connotation symbolique pour tous les acteurs éducatifs et un pouvoir prédictif sur la scolarité ultérieure avéré. En alliant les approches historique, comparative, économique et pédagogique, cette recherche sur le redoublement synthétise et enrichit les principaux résultats empiriques attachés aux multiples facettes de cette mesure qui s’avère être plus qu’un « fait scolaire ».
