Ce travail est une ethnographie des Katukina de la famille linguistique du même nom (différent des Katukina Pano). L'absence d'études antérieures concernant cette population justifie le caractère monographique de ce travail, qui s'intéresse en outre à la façon particulière dont les Katukina semblent avoir répondu aux différents événements historiques qui les ont affectés. Une attention particulière est à cet égard portée aux relations avec d'autres groupes, entre les individus et avec le monde des esprits. Elles apparaissent basées sur la cohabitation de deux concepts largement polysémiques. Le premier, -wara, est lié au corps, à la maitrise et à l'idée de contenant; le second, wayan, à) la parenté, à la ressemblance (ou à la complémentarité) et à la fluidité. Les Katukina se caractérisent par leur ressemblance avec leurs voisins kanamari, dont on a longtemps considéré qu'ils n'étaient qu'une des branches. Les données recueillies chez Katukina sont systématiquement comparées avec celles disponibles sur las Kanamari, afin de mettre en relief les relations complexes que ces deux populations entretiennent entre elles.
