La modélisation des fluctuations du climat nécessite de disposer d'analogues anciens pour mieux appréhender les situations futures. Deux paramètres clés sont à mesurer pour permettre de contrôler les modèles globaux: la variabilité latitudinale et la variabilité saisonnière. En géologie sédimentaire, peu d'outils permettent la caractérisation paléoenvironnementale à l'échelle saisonnière pour des temps anté-Quaternaire. Cet ouvrage illustre la mise au point d'un outil d'analyse permettant de reconstituer les contrastes thermiques saisonniers au cours des temps géologiques: la coquille des huîtres. La croissance par accrétion des coquilles de mollusques enregistre l'histoire de la vie de ces organismes. L'analyse géochimique des coquilles, le long d'un profil de croissance (ou sclérochronologie), livre ainsi des informations précises sur l'évolution des conditions physico-chimiques et environnementales.
