L'objet de ce livre est la manière adoptée afin de recréer la culture martiniquaise par Edouard Glissant et Raphaël Confiant respectivement dans les romans La Case du commandeur (1981) et Commandeur du sucre (1994). Ces romans qui prétendent refléter l'identité martiniquaise selon des paramètres historiques, géographiques, humains et ethniques, correspondent-ils à leurs respectives poétiques: l'Antillanité et la Créolité? La totalité du corpus des romans est considérée comme les visions recréées par deux informateurs savants sur leur culture et sur leur pays. Les structures lexico-sémantiques sont étudiées à partir des lemmes mis en discours afin de nommer les personnages et de marquer les repères de la localisation spatiale et temporelle associés à des notions identifiées. L'étude permet d'établir les rapprochements et les écarts des aspects analysés entre les deux poétiques et leurs romans parus dans les deux dernières décennies du vingtième siècle. Les romans comprennent une chronologie s'étalant dès l'arrivée des esclaves à la Martinique jusqu'aux environs de la fin des années 1970 dans le récit de Glissant, puis autour de la Martinique des années 1930, dans le cas de Confiant.
