Reconnaître les mots prononcés par un locuteur implique la résolution d'un problème de localisation des frontières lexicales dans le flux sonore, ou segmentation lexicale face à un stimulus supposé être ambigu. La segmentation lexicale repose sur des mécanismes ascendants, ou guidage du traitement perceptif par l'information contenue dans le stimulus acoustique, et sur des mécanismes descendants, ou guidage du traitement perceptif par l'information en mémoire (connaissance du vocabulaire et de la langue par l'auditeur). Le travail de recherche présenté ici explore expérimentalement le mécanisme de segmentation lexicale sous cette double optique auprès de centaines d'individus. Il propose également un modèle mathématique pour expliquer un phénomène inattendu: la facilitation de la reconnaissance des mots parlés par la présence d'enchâssements lexicaux. Aucune des données obtenues dans cette recherche ne permet de conclure que la compétition lexicale, jusqu'ici supposée être un mécanisme essentiel dans la segmentation lexicale, soit un mécanisme nécessaire à la reconnaissance des mots parlés.
