Europe est certainement l'un des objets les plus intrigants du système solaire. Découvert en 1610 par Galiléo Galilée et Simon Marius, ce satellite de Jupiter, légèrement plus petit que notre Lune terrestre, se caractérise par sa surface de glace, jeune et dynamique. Cet ouvrage porte avant tout un regard original sur la compréhension des mécanismes à l’œuvre dans les profondeurs d’Europe, essentiellement à partir des données transmises par la sonde Galileo entre 1996 et 2002. L’observation des nombreuses structures de surface constitue donc un point de départ pour parvenir à cerner les processus "géologiques" mis en jeu au cours de leur genèse. Les travaux présentés dans ce livre s’appuient en premier lieu sur un état des connaissances à l’issue de la mission Galileo. Ils tentent d’établir un lien entre les différentes structures observées et la dynamique de la croûte de glace superficielle afin de répondre à une question fondamentale: existe-il un océan d’eau liquide sous cette coquille de glace? Une réponse affirmative pose en retour la question légitime de la présence de la vie depuis la découverte d’écosystèmes dans les milieux hostiles des fonds océaniques terrestres.
