En Allemagne le taux d'allaitement avoisine les 90% à la naissance, tandis qu’en France seul 53% des bébés sont allaités au moment de leur naissance. Cependant l’Allemagne possède un taux de natalité parmi les plus bas au monde, à savoir 1,3 alors qu’en France ce taux est de 1,9. Or malgré quelques divergences, ce sont surtout les similitudes historiques et sociologiques entre les deux pays qui priment et qui n’expliquent en rien la différence du taux d’allaitement et du taux de natalité. Cette étude avait pour objectif d’apporter des éléments de réponses à ces deux réalités. Il semblerait que les représentations de l’alimentation du bébé et les motivations d’allaiter ou de ne pas allaiter diffèrent de manière importante entre les mères des deux pays. D’autre part, les femmes allemandes sont moins nombreuses à reprendre une activité professionnelle après la naissance d’un enfant et envisagent une durée de congé bien plus longue que les mères françaises. Les carences en matière de garde du jeune enfant semblent toujours contraindre les femmes allemandes à devoir choisir entre carrière ou enfant.
