Zone humide sujette à débat par l'artificialité de sa création et de son fonctionnement, l'étang intérieur est un objet géographique méconnu en France, notamment dans les régions non traditionnellement vouées à une pisciculture intensive. Par ses multiples zones d'ombre, l'étude des étangs en Limousin constitue un terrain approprié à cette expérimentation. Que ce soit grâce à une nouvelle méthodologie d'inventaire ou à une approche embrassant tous les champs géographiques actuels (de la géographie physique à la géographie historique, en passant par l'analyse paysagère, socio-économique et socio-culturelle des étangs, de leur environnement immédiat et des Hommes qui les font vivre), cette étude permet de réhabiliter une région d'étangs vieille de mille ans. Grâce au référentiel informatisé utilisant moult items issus d'un travail ayant nécessité cinq années de terrain, des typologies et régionalisations de plans d'eau apparaissent (Haut-Limousin, première région française en nombre et densité d'étangs), offrant un outil de gestion au plus près de la réalité, puisque adaptable aux variabilités spatiales des processus limniques.
