Esta novela breve narra la historia de Kino y su mujer Juana, ambos indígenas habitantes de un pequeño pueblo costero donde lo más que se puede encontrar son chozas y viejas barcas pesqueras. Sin embargo la gente de allí vive en calma, son felices en su miseria. El problema se presenta cuando un escorpión pica al pequeño Coyotito, hijo de los protagonistas, y éstos se ven obligados a recurrir al único médico de la ciudad, que sin ningún escrúpulo reniega a atenderles sin compensación económica. Desesperados, Kino y Juana recurren al mar en busca de una perla que permita salvar la vida del niño. Para sorpresa de todos, la suerte les sonríe ofreciéndoles la mejor y mayor perla que hayan visto jamás.El interés de La perla reside en el enfrentamiento entre dos mundos: el de los ricos y el de los pobres, y en el proceso de cambio en las relaciones humanas en función de la situación económica de las personas. Esto explica que sea una novela ampliamente usada en la escuela para invitar a la reflexión ética.
