Zhang Yibing zufolge endete die Tradition des westlichen Marxismus bereits 1968 nach der Veröffentlichung von Adornos Negative Dialektik. Damit wurden die theoretischen Grundlagen des authentischen Marxismus und eine substanzielle Kritik des Kapitalismus aufgegeben zugunsten einer zunehmend idealistischen Kulturkritik. Beginnend mit 1968 teilte sich diese neue theoretische Strömung in drei unterschiedliche Linien: post-Marxsche Denkströmung, postmoderner Marxismus und Spätmarxismus. Alle drei Strömungen eint der Abschied von marxistischen Grundthesen und Grundbegriffen. Ob Adornos Negative Dialektik, Debords Die Gesellschaft des Spektakels, Derridas Marx‘ Gespenster oder Žižeks The Sublime Object of Ideology (dt. Das erhabene Objekt der Ideologie) – sie alle eint eine Instrumentalisierung marxistischer Terminologie im Sinne einer letztendlich idealistischen Theorie der Postmoderne. Zhang analysiert im vorliegenden Band die Hauptwerke der post-Marxschen Denkströmung und zeigt, dass sie nichts mit Marxismus, sondern viel mit theoretischem Rückfall zu tun haben.
