Description

This edition is based on the successful book by Luis F. Diaz and colleagues, Waste Management in Developing countries. This book has been out of print for several years and it was time to publish a revised edition adapted to the times. The special conditions in economically developing countries were evaluated, once again, and the results indicated that today these can show very different levels of development. This is especially true for the differences between urban and rural areas. Thus, the manifold problems around waste disposal are often unsolved specifically in urban areas. This applies, on the one hand to the used or insufficient technology, but also to the organizational structures and financing models. It was, therefore, a concern of the authors to present the possible techniques in their respective technical diversity and the framework conditions for their application, with focus on the biological processes of composting and fermentation. In addition, techniques and forms of recyclable material recycling are presented. The most comprehensive chapter deals with landfills, the basis of all waste disposal and certainly the most important building block in the target countries of this book, since incineration usually is out of the question due the high cost and technical complexity. Here, in addition to the techniques, it is shown, which elements are indispensable, and which can be retrofitted, far-reaching measures adapted to the financial circumstances. Another key element of this work is the presentation of the preparation of an integrated waste management concept as the basis of any orderly waste management. The book is aimed at planners, technical administration and supervisory authorities. In addition, it is intended as a textbook for university education and provides lecturers and students with extensive study and teaching material. Due to the many extensions and details covered in the document, the volume has grown considerably, so that the work has been divided into three volumes. The contents of each volume are distributed as follows: Volume I: Position of waste management in the context of infrastructure, characteristics and generation of waste materials, storage, collection, transport and transfer, and street cleaning. Pages 256; 52 figures and 26 tables Volume II: Treatment processes such as composting, AD, material recycling, thermal treatment and biological pretreatment. Pages 444; 202 figures and 156 tables Volume III: Management and Treatment of Healthcare Waste, Landfill Engineering, Aftercare, Emissions and Immissions of Waste Management, Integrated Waste Management, Financing and Organization. Pages 484; 56 figures and 52 tables
