1996 berief der damals amtierende südafrikanische Präsident Nelson Mandela Desmond Tutu als 1. Vorsitzenden der Wahrheits- und Versöhnungskommission, um Südafrika im Übergang von der Apartheid zur Postapartheid zu begleiten. Die Wahrheits- und Versöhnungskommission (TRC) war von 1996 - 1998 in East London in der Provinz Ostkap in Südafrika tätig. Ihre Aufgabe war es, Menschenrechtsverletzungen aufzuklären, die während der Zeit der Apartheid verübt wurden, Amnestieanträge zu prüfen und Empfehlungen für Entschädigungs- und Schmerzensgeldzahlungen gegenüber der Regierung auszusprechen. Inspiriert durch seinen Glauben reifte in Tutu die Vision, dass eine Veränderung der Gesellschaft und die Heilung der Wunden der Apartheid möglich sind. Die Aufarbeitung der Apartheid, untersucht aus einer theologischen und historischen Perspektive, steht im Zentrum dieses Buches. Anhand der Biographien prägender Persönlichkeiten, die sich als Resultat ihres Glaubens für gesellschaftspolitische Veränderungen eingesetzt und Nationen in Transformationsprozessen begleitet haben, wird die Aufarbeitung der Apartheid im Rahmen der TRC erforscht. Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf dem Friedensnobelpreisträger und anglikanischem Bischof Desmond Tutu, der mit seinem jahrzehntelangen Einsatz gegen Rassismus zu einer Schlüsselperson der Anti-Apartheids-Bewegung wurde. Betrachtet wird seine Rolle als 1. Vorsitzender der TRC. Es wird die These aufgestellt, dass Tutu zu einem Mentor für eine ganze Nation in der Aufarbeitung der Apartheid wurde.
