Durch die Interpretation von Einzelgedichten und Gedichtgruppen in chronologischer Reihenfolge lassen sich sowohl die Werkentwicklung Beyers im Allgemeinen als auch Verfahren, Strukturen und Themen im Einzelnen erkennen. Die Interpretationen erhellen dabei sowohl das Traditionsverhalten von Beyers Lyrik als auch seinen spezifischen Versuch, archäologische Sprach- und Geschichtsarbeit zu leisten. Damit will der Band gleichermaßen einen Beitrag zur Gegenwartsliteraturforschung leisten wie darüber hinaus zur Lyrikologie generell.
