Adolf Kußmaul war Arzt, medizinischer Forscher, Hochschullehrer und zugleich Lyriker und Feuilletonist. Mit „Die Störungen der Sprache" legt er eine Einführung in die menschliche Sprache als solches vor, in dem er sie von der „Tiersprache" abgrenzt, ihre Entstehung erläutert und die Lautbildung erklärt. Hiervon ausgehend zeigt er eine Vielzahl von möglichen pathologischen Erscheinungen auf und geht auf ihre Ursachen ein. Kussmaul präsentiert ein sorgsam recherchiertes Werk, das nicht nur für Sprachforscher und Mediziner von Interesse ist, sondern auch für den sprachinteressierten Laien. Sorgfältig bearbeiteter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1881.
