Als Philip Guston sich zu Beginn der Sechzigerjahre dem Medium der Lithografie zuwandte, galt er als einer der maßgeblichen Protagonisten des Abstrakten Expressionismus in Amerika. Schon zu dieser Zeit kündigte sich in seinem Werk jener Wandel an, der zu den späteren gegenstandsbezogenen Arbeiten führen sollte, die im letzten Jahrzehnt seines Schaffens dominierten. In der eindrucksvollen Reihe der kurz vor seinem Tod 1980 geschaffenen Schwarz-Weiß-Lithografien zeigt sich das vollständige Repertoire der wieder bildmächtig gewordenen Gegenstände wie in einer Art visuellen Autobiografie: die einfachen Dinge des Alltags, die Uhren, die Schuhe und Bücher, die Zigaretten und Aschenbecher und gelegentlich seine geliebten Sandwiches und Kirschen. All diese Dinge aus der Welt des Privaten und Intimen erwecken Gustons ironisches Auge und seine bedächtige Hand im weichen Duktus der Lithokreide zu einzigartigem Leben. Der hochwertige Bildband zeigt erstmals das gesamte druckgrafische Oeuvre Philip Gustons. In 59 exzellent reproduzierten Arbeiten begegnet der Betrachter dem neben Jackson Pollock und Willem de Kooning einflussreichsten amerikanischen Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts.
