Das MSG-Schweißverfahren ist das am häufigsten eingesetzte Verfahren in der Schweißtechnik. Die Prozessstabilität und das Schweißergebnis werden entscheidend durch die Qualität der Schutzgasabdeckung bestimmt. Ein umfassendes Verständnis der Strömung im Brenner und die Kenntnis über die Wechselwirkungen von Schutzgasströmung und Prozess bilden die Grundlage für die Entwicklung von strömungsoptimierten MSG-Schweißbrennern und wirtschaftlichen Schweißprozessen, insbesondere für die Anwendbarkeit des Verfahrens an atmosphärensensiblen Werkstoffen. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden geeignete Methoden für die Strömungsanalyse an MSG-Schweißprozessen ausgewählt, weiterentwickelt und in Kombination angewendet. Eingesetzt wurde die Numerische Strömungssimulation, die Particle-Image-Velocimetry (PIV), die Schlierentechnik und die Messung der Sauerstoffkonzentration. Durch die Anwendung dieses Methodenbaukastens wurden die Wechselwirkungen zwischen der Brennergeometrie, dem Prozess und der Qualität der Schutzgasabdeckung aufgezeigt sowie Empfehlungen für die Brennerkonstruktion und Verfahrensanwendungen abgeleitet.
