Der französische Naturforscher Peter LeDru nahm von 1796 bis 1798 an einer Reise teil, die ihn an Bord der „Belle Angelique", einer Brigantine, in mehreren Jahren nach Westindien führen sollte. Gleich zu Beginn der Reise, auf Höhe der Azoren, gerät die Expedition in einen schweren Sturm, der das Schiff entmastet und beinahe alle Teilnehmer das Leben gekostet hätte. Doch nicht nur dieses Abenteurer geht gut aus und LeDru gelingt es, einen viel beachteten Bericht über die Reise, ihre Umstände, aber auch über Entdeckungen in exotischen Ländern zu verfassen, der für so bedeutsam erachtet wurde, dass ihm die damals seltene Ehre der Übersetzung in die deutsche Sprache zuteil wurde (1811). Autor und Übersetzer haben ein Werk geschaffen, das es wie kaum ein zweites versteht, die untrennbar verwobenen Abenteuer der historischen Schiffahrt und des Entdeckertums im 18. Jahrhundert lebendig in die Neuzeit zu transportieren.
