Der Ausgangspunkt dieser Arbeit ist eine solche Nebenwirkung, die Heparin-induzierte Thrombozytopenie Typ II (HIT-II), die bei der Anwendung von Heparin, einem häufig ge-nutzten Arzneimittel zur Blutgerinnungshemmung, auftritt. Die Kosten von Krankheiten, bzw. in diesem Fall einer sehr ernsten Nebenwirkung, zu untersuchen, ist Teil einer in Deutschland noch jungen Wissenschaft, der Pharmakoökonomie. Der Autor zeigt, dass es dabei um die wirtschaftliche Betrachtung von Medikamenten anhand ihrer Kosten geht. Die Pharmakoökonomie öffnet ihren Blick jedoch auch anderen wichtigen Aspekten, die der Name zunächst nicht vermuten lässt, wie z. B. der Lebensqualität Gerade in der jüngeren Vergangenheit standen die Ausgaben für Arzneimittel immer wieder im Mittelpunkt gesundheitspolitischer Diskussionen, die sich hauptsächlich um Preise und Wirkstoffe drehen. Am Beispiel der Heparin-induzierten Thrombozytopenie Typ II lässt sich gut nachvollziehen, dass diese Betrachtung zu kurz greifen kann.
