La linguistique a longtemps pris pour point de départ de toute analyse l'axiome de l'existence de la phrase, unité d'ordre intuitif plutôt que théorique. Or, ces derniers temps, on a assisté à un intérêt croissant pour les études consacrées non seulement à d'autres unités que la phrase, mais aussi aux mécanismes linguistiques qui relient ces unités entre elles: la macro-syntaxe et la macro-sémantique ont vu le jour. Cependant, travailler dans ce domaine-frontière entre phrase et texte pose toute une série de nouveaux problèmes théoriques, méthodologiques, empiriques. Rien n'étant encore établi, les propositions vont parfois dans toutes les directions et le terrain peut paraître chaotique. Les contributions de nombreux spécialistes réunies dans le présent ouvrage ont pour objectif d'approfondir cette problématique tout en étendant la perspective à des phénomènes de nature plutôt sémantique.
