Nach einer Ubersicht der Geschichte des "taiwanischen Films" von 1945 bis ca. 1980 umreisst die Arbeit die Entwicklung der Erneuerungsbewegung des "Neuen Films der 80er Jahre" und stellt die wichtigsten Regisseure sowie deren Werke vor. Ein besonderes Gewicht erhalten dabei die beiden herausragenden Vertreter der Bewegung, Hou Xiaoxian und Yang Dechang (Edward Yang). Die formale Neuheit der Neuen Filme wird genauso untersucht wie deren Einbettung in die kulturelle, politische und soziale Entwicklung der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte. Der Neue Film erweist sich dabei als scharfsichtiger Interpret des Zustands der taiwanesischen Gesellschaft in einer Zeit des Umbruchs. Ein Ausblick auf die 90er Jahre zeigt mogliche zukunftige Entwicklungen des taiwanesischen Films auf."
