Gegenstand dieser Studie sind die vielfältigen Kontakte zwischen Griechenland und Ägypten während des Zeitraumes vom 7. bis zum 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Ein Überblick über die Beziehungen zwischen Ägypten und der Ägäiswelt bis zum Ende des 2. Jahrtausends v. Chr. führt in die Thematik ein. Die wechselseitigen Beziehungen werden vor der Folie der vorderorientalischen Großmächte vorgestellt. Dazu gehörten das assyrische und das babylonische Reich, sowie das persische Großreich der Achaimeniden, das Ägypten erobert und zeitweise in seinen Herrschaftsbereich integriert hatte. Ein wesentlicher Teil dieser Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit in Ägypten siedelnden Griechen und wertet die erhaltenen Quellen in Bezug auf die damaligen Lebensverhältnisse aus. Die Ausführungen zu den politischen, kulturellen und religiösen Berührungspunkten werden ergänzt durch Überlegungen zu den wirtschaftlichen Wechselwirkungen, so zum Beispiel im Bereich des Münzwesens.
