Im kommunikativen Verhalten des Kaisers sah der römische Historiker Cornelius Tacitus den entscheidenden Faktor für den Ablauf des historischen Geschehens. Dessen Fähigkeit, durch eine offene Kommunikation mit seinen Untergebenen deren aufrichtige Loyalität zu gewinnen, entschied maßgeblich über den Erfolg seiner Herrschaft. Die vorliegende Studie belegt diese These durch eine Analyse des kommunikativen, insbesondere körpersprachlichen Verhaltens der taciteischen Figuren und weist nach, daß Tacitus keinesfalls – wie ihm häufig vorgeworfen wurde – historische Personen und Ereignisse in böswilliger Verzerrung darstellt, sondern ein plausibles und wirklichkeitsgetreues Bild der Geschichte zeichnet. Zur Rekonstruktion der Wirkung nonverbaler Phänomene auf das zeitgenössische Publikum bedient sich der Autor eines interdisziplinären Ansatzes, der die Quellenbefunde zur römischen Körpersprache vor dem Hintergrund soziologischer, psychologischer und verhaltensbiologischer Erkenntnisse untersucht. Dadurch leistet er Pionierarbeit auf einem methodischen Neuland, das nicht nur zu einem vertieften und umfassenderen Verständnis des taciteischen Werkes führt, sondern der gesamten Altertumswissenschaft neue Perspektiven und Methoden zur Verfügung stellen kann.
